Privacy Policy
Effective October 13, 2026
The short version
- You can play without giving us your name or email. The app creates an anonymous account for you.
- We keep what the game needs: your votes, favorites, the jokes you submit and the authors you block.
- No ads, no tracking across apps or websites, and we never sell or share your data for advertising.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time from the app.
1. Who we are
Dad Joke Battle (the “app”) and this website are made by Jerry St. Sauver (“we”, “us”), an independent developer. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. If you have a question, email info@becompletedesign.com.
2. What we collect
Your account
- An anonymous account. The first time you open the app, it signs you in as a guest. This creates a random account ID that isn't tied to your name, email or phone number.
- Sign in with Apple (optional). If you choose to sign in with Apple to keep your data across devices, Apple gives us a stable account identifier and, if you share it, your name. We don't ask Apple for your email address. We use your name only as your account's display name. Other players never see it.
- Account settings. When your account was created, whether it's linked to Apple, and when you accepted the Terms of Use.
What you do in the app
- Votes. For each battle you judge: which joke won, which one lost, and when.
- Favorites. The jokes you save and when you saved them. If you used an earlier version of the app, favorites it stored on your device are copied to your account the first time you open this version.
- Jokes you submit. The text, when you submitted it, whether it was approved, and how many votes and reports it has.
- Blocked authors. The accounts whose jokes you've chosen not to see.
- Reports. When you report a joke: which joke, the reason you chose and when.
Crash reports
If the app crashes, Firebase Crashlytics sends us a crash report so we can fix the problem. It includes the code location of the crash, your device model, iOS version, app version and a random installation ID. Crashlytics also notes when the app is opened, so we can see how often it crashes. None of this is linked to your account.
Technical information
Like any app that uses the internet, the app's network requests include your IP address. Our service providers (below) process it to deliver the service. We don't store it alongside your account or use it to locate or identify you.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your email address, phone number, contacts, photos, precise or approximate location, or advertising identifier. The app has no ads and no advertising, analytics or tracking tools beyond the crash reporting above.
3. How we use it
- To run the game: showing you battles, counting votes for the leaderboard, keeping your favorites, and showing your stats.
- To keep the community clean: automatically screening submitted jokes, handling reports, hiding jokes from authors you've blocked, and preventing abuse such as vote stuffing.
- To fix problems: using crash reports to find and fix bugs.
- To answer you: replying when you contact us.
We process this information to provide the service you asked for, and for our legitimate interests in keeping the app safe, fair and working.
4. What other players see
If you submit a joke and it's approved, other players see its text and vote count in battles and on the leaderboard. They don't see your name, your account ID or any other information about you. Your votes, favorites, blocked authors and reports are private to your account.
5. Service providers
We don't sell your information or share it for advertising. We use these providers to run the app:
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions and Crashlytics) stores your account and game data and runs the app's servers. Data is stored in the United States. See Firebase's privacy information.
- Apple handles Sign in with Apple if you use it, under Apple's privacy policy.
- icanhazdadjoke.com supplies most of the jokes. The app requests jokes from it directly, so it receives your IP address like any website you visit. Our servers also ask it to confirm a joke's text when it gets its first vote. No information about you is sent with that request.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
6. Keeping and deleting data
We keep your data for as long as your account exists.
To delete your account, open the app and go to Profile → Settings → Delete Account. This permanently deletes:
- your account and, if you signed in with Apple, the app's access to your Apple ID
- your favorites, votes and blocked authors (your votes are also removed from the leaderboard)
- every joke you submitted
Some information is kept after deletion:
- Reports you filed are kept so we have a record of moderation decisions. They reference your old account ID, which no longer belongs to anyone.
- Server logs about moderation (for example, that a joke was hidden after reports) are kept for up to 30 days.
- Crash reports are kept by Crashlytics for up to 90 days.
If you play as a guest and delete the app without signing in with Apple, you can't get back into that account. Delete your account in the app before uninstalling if you want its data removed.
7. Your choices and rights
- You can play without signing in, and you can sign out of Apple at any time.
- You can remove favorites, delete jokes you submitted, unblock authors and delete your account from inside the app.
- Depending on where you live (for example, the EU, UK or California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your data, and to object to or restrict how it's used. To make a request, email us from the app (Profile → Settings → Contact Support) so we can find your account. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Children
Dad Joke Battle is for people 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, contact us and we'll delete their account.
9. Security
The app talks to our servers over encrypted connections, and access rules limit each account to its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and keep only what the game needs.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app or on this site before it takes effect.
